The world's fourth-largest tobacco company is considering entering the United States, a move that could have a big impact on two large Triad companies. Imperial Tobacco Group plc, a British company, sees the United States as a potentially profitable market with less risk of lawsuits than there was three or four years ago. CEO Gareth Davis told news agency Bloomberg last week that he considered the U.S. an attractive market. Such a move would likely shake up the U.S. cigarette market, and could pose new challenges to Winston-Salem-based Reynolds American Inc. (NYSE: RAI) and Greensboro-based Lorillard Tobacco Co. (NYSE: CG). Imperial is considerably larger than either of those companies, earning revenues of about $21.5 billion in 2005, based on Monday's exchange rates. By comparison, Reynolds, the second-largest U.S. tobacco company, had total revenues of $8.3 billion in 2005 and Lorillard, the No. 3 cigarette company, had revenues of $3.6 billion. Philip Morris USA, the country's biggest cigarette maker, had sales of $18.1 billion in 2005, though that was just a fraction of its overall business, as its parent company, Altria Group, brought in another $45.3 billion in overseas cigarette sales and $34.4 billion from its food operations. Imperial's cigarette brands include West and Davidoff. It already does business in 130 countries.

General Cigar Co. has given the Bolivar brand an extreme makeover with the intent to provide smokers with a flavorful powerhouse cigar and with input from master blenders such as Benji Menendez, Estelo Padrón and Ernesto Perez-Carrillo; they have made Bolivar one of the boldest, most full-bodied cigars in the General Cigar portfolio. Bolivar is dressed in a thick, full-bodied wrapper of Honduran San Agustin Ligero and is bound with Havano Medio Tiempo. The blend for Bolivar consists of Dominican tobacco, complemented by Nicaraguan filler from Esteli, and from the remote volcanic island of Ometepe. Bolivar is rich and spicy, medium to full-bodied; it packs a little kick while staying smooth and flavorful.

Originally founded in Cuba, the Bolivar is a tribute to its Cuban heritage with a full-bodied mix of robust tobaccos from the Carribean and Central America.

The Bolivar was re-blended and re-released in 2005 with a new and improved full-bodied and full-flavored blend. Like its flavor, the brand itself has a very rich history. Bolivar cigars got their start in Cuba at the turn of the 20th century. Since day one on the market they have been highly sought after and recognized as a fine premium cigar.

The new 2005 blend is hand rolled in the Dominican Republic and was crafted in an effort to recapture the original Cuban blend, which in 1901 was full-bodied and very robust. To succeed in doing this, legendary cigar maker Daniel Nunez utilized a wide range of tobacco leaves and the resulting cigar has received great praise from industry experts. The blend starts with fillers from Nicaragua and Honduras and is held together with a Connecticut medio tiempo binder. This binder is similar to the wrapper that is used on the full-bodied and world-renowned Partagas Black Label. To finish the Bolivar, a Honduran grown San Augustine ligero wrapper is added providing that last shot of spice. Although full-bodied and full-flavored, the Bolivar is not too overpowering, providing hours of enjoyment with a long finish.
